Automatic Translation System and Avatar Animation from Turkish to Turkish Sign Language

The project "Automatic Translation System and Avatar Animation from Turkish to Turkish Sign Language" supported by TUBITAK  (114E263) and conducted by Istanbul Technical University and Boğaziçi Universities, was carried out in two years between 15/10/2014-15/10/2016. In this project, a translation and visualization method was designed and developed to minimize the difference in reading and writing learning time between hearing impaired children at primary school level and children with normal development, thus eliminating the disadvantage in the education of children with disabilities.

For this purpose, the project brings together three different working groups from ITU and Boğaziçi Universities with expertise in Turkish natural language processing, linguistic research of TID (Turkish Sign Language) and human-computer interaction. In addition to academics and students from these different disciplines, the project also involves hearing-impaired interpreters and educators.

Kenan Kaşarcı (Educator-Researcher), Nevzat Kırkıç (Hearing Impaired Interpreter (HIIT)), Jale Üründül (HIIT), Elvan Özparlak (HIIT) and Neslihan Kurt (Child of Deaf Adults - CODA) are involved in the project.
